Up From the Grave He Rose

American hymn writer Robert Lowry (1826-1899) wanted to be recognized first as a preacher and second as a hymn composer. Despite his preference, this Baptist minister is remembered first for his beautiful hymns such as “Marching to Zion” and “Up from the Grave He Rose.” Up from the Grave He Arose is about Jesus returning to life after his death. Indeed, we serve a risen savior.

Low in the grave He lay,
Jesus, my Savior,
Waiting the coming day,
Jesus, my Lord! Refrain:

Refrain: Up from the grave He arose,
With a mighty triumph o’er His foes,
He arose a Victor from the dark domain,
And He lives forever, with His saints to reign.
He arose! He arose!
Hallelujah! Christ arose!

Vainly they watch His bed,
Jesus, my Savior;
Vainly they seal the dead,
Jesus, my Lord! Refrain:

Death cannot keep his Prey,
Jesus, my Savior;
He tore the bars away,
Jesus, my Lord! Refrain.
